Bloons TD: the tower defense game that started the monkeys-versus-balloons series
Bloons TD is where Ninja Kiwi's tower defense series began. The idea came from their earlier game Bloons, where a monkey throws darts at balloons: turn the monkeys into towers, give the balloons a track to follow, and you have a strategy game that has run through six sequels since. This is the first one, the 2007 Flash original, running in the page on Ruffle.
There is one track, a grey path that snakes across a green field, and bloons enter at one end and leave at the other. You start with 650 money and 40 lives. Every bloon that makes it to the exit costs lives — one for a red, more for the tougher colours, because every layer inside it counts. Popping bloons earns money, and money buys towers and upgrades. A game runs 50 rounds, and the last one is a wall of black and white bloons.
Five towers do the work. The Dart Monkey throws single darts and can learn piercing darts that pop two bloons at once. The Tack Shooter sprays eight tacks around itself. The Ice Tower freezes everything near it, the Bomb Tower lobs explosives that pop in an area, and the Super Monkey fires a constant stream of darts for a price that makes you think twice. Where you put them matters as much as which you buy: corners, where a tower can hit the same bloon for a long time, are worth more than straight lines.
Controls & mechanics
| Action | Control | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Build a tower | Click its icon, then click beside the track | The circle shows its range while you place it; it has to go on grass, not on the path |
| Start a round | Start Round button | Sends the next wave; the button comes back when the last bloon is gone |
| Upgrade or sell | Click a placed tower | Shows its two upgrades and a sell button; selling returns 80% of everything spent on it |
| Restart | Restart button (bottom right) | Starts the game again from round 1 with 650 money and 40 lives |
| Sound | Speaker icon (bottom left) | Mutes and unmutes the pops and music |
How to get further in Bloons TD
- Put the first darts on a corner: A Dart Monkey on the inside of a bend sees the same bloon twice as long as one on a straight. Your first 650 buys two or three towers — put them where the track turns back on itself.
- Buy piercing darts early: The Dart Monkey upgrade lets each dart pop two bloons. It is the cheapest way to double your damage while the waves are still reds and blues.
- Tack Shooters thin out crowds: Eight tacks at once are wasted on a single bloon but shred a tight group. Get the speed upgrade and place them where the track bunches up.
- Ice and bombs belong together: Frozen bloons cannot be popped by darts or tacks, but bombs break them. An Ice Tower with a Bomb Tower beside it is the pairing the game is built around.
- Know black and white bloons: Black bloons are immune to bombs and white bloons cannot be frozen, and both carry two yellows inside. Have plain darts and tacks covering the track before they arrive.
- Upgrade before you spread out: An upgraded tower usually beats a second cheap one. Spend on range and speed for the towers already on good corners before you fill the field.
Key features
- The original: Ninja Kiwi's 2007 Bloons Tower Defense, the first game of the series, in its original Flash build.

Pro tip: Sell nothing in the early rounds. Every tower you keep keeps earning its money back by popping; a sale only returns 80%. Save selling for the moment you need to move a tower to a better corner.
